Three months after all Nigeria’s ambassadors were recalled, the compilation of the new ambassadors’ list by the Federal Government is still in progress, it has been reported.
On September 2, 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recalled all Nigeria’s ambassadors, both career and non-career.
They were asked to return to the country on or before October 31, 2023.
Nigeria has about 300 foreign missions abroad.
Presidential aide, Ajuri Ngelale, said the action was sequel to President Bola Tinubu’s study of the present state of affairs at Nigerian consulates, offices, and embassies across the world.
Ngelale added that the latest move aligned with the President’s ‘Renewed Hope agenda’.
There have been concerned about the funding of Nigeria’s mission abroad.
Even though the new government has increased funding for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the currency parity has weakened the strength of whatever is allocated, as activities of the Ministry is mostly in dollars.
It was also reported on December 21, 2023, that the Federal Government would soon set up a new committee that would select the new set of ambassadors to replace those recalled.
However, it was gathered that the Presidency was still compiling names of new ambassadors that would represent Nigeria in different countries.
