The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike emphasized security and job creation as key priorities during a meeting with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery.
The Commissioner paid a courtesy visit to the minister’s office in Abuja on Tuesday.
The minister, in response to the commissioner’s inquiry about priority areas of the administration, highlighted that his focus aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which includes eight priorities such as food security, ending poverty, economic growth, job creation, access to capital, improving the business environment, rule of law, and fighting corruption.
While acknowledging the challenges, the minister mentioned significant progress in addressing security concerns in Abuja. He explained that the proximity of Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, and Kaduna, states with high activities of bandits, contributes to the security situation in the FCT. The minister commended the commitment of security agencies, particularly the police, and highlighted the support provided to enhance their effectiveness in combating criminal activities.
On the economic front, the minister noted the transformation of Abuja into a construction site, emphasizing the creation of jobs, especially for youths. He highlighted ongoing projects in the area councils contributing to employment opportunities.
Earlier, the British High Commissioner, Richard Montgomery, expressed the critical nature of the visit to seek the minister’s views on the development of the Federal Capital Territory. He mentioned discussions on security issues, bilateral relationships between the UK and Nigeria, and initiatives to enhance the business environment.
Montgomery conveyed the UK’s interest in understanding the priority areas to strengthen bilateral relationships and contribute to the prosperity of the FCT. The commissioner also discussed recent engagements between the UK and Nigeria, particularly in the areas of security and defense partnerships.
The meeting provided a platform for dialogue on shared interests and collaborative efforts to address challenges and promote development in the Federal Capital Territory.
